Santander, the capital city of the province is located mid way along the Cantabrian coast. It is one of the most elegant cities in Spain, a town that entertained kings and remains, located as it is on one of the most beautiful coastlines, a foremost tourist destination that offers many aspects, from an unequalled monumental centre to an intimate relationship with the natural world.
Perhaps the best time of the year to visit the city is in July and August when the city plays host to the International Festival of Music, Dance and Drama.
Santander’s golden times started in the 18th century when, because of its strategic importance on the banks of the Cantabrian Sea, there was a huge increase of commercial activity. In the 19th century, the city experienced a boom in tourism; one that has continued until modern times.
The city is encrusted along the bay like a jewels on the necklace on a princess. There are beaches, parks and proud tree-lined boulevards. An afternoon coffee in one of the many traditional cafes just watching the world go by, is a pleasure that has to be savoured with time to spare.
