Lanzarote, a city formed by and fed by the sea. The relationship is long and enduring. This was a small port that was founded in the XV century as part of Spanish imperial expansion. Its location on one of the most beautiful islands of the Canary Island Chain has made it a target for many pirate attacks and incursions.

The town of Arrecife is a great place to act as a base to visit the singular attractions that the island offers.

Place Worth Visiting

The Castle of San José is one of the formidable fortresses that was built to defend the islands from pirate attack. This fortress is a short walk from the centre of the city of Arrecife and has watched over the Port of Naos since 1775. After falling into disuse for many years the castle was restored to its former grandeur but this time as a centre for artistic excellence.

The fortress is now home to the International Museum of Contemporary Art and houses works of such notable artists as Mompó and Canogar as well those of the architect of the centre, César Manrique. This is one of the most impressive buildings of the city. It not only houses the international art collection but also has a concert hall, restaurant and crystal gallery.

The other castle of the city is the castle of San Gabriel. This castle is built on the small islet of Quemado from which it presides over the entrance to the city. It was designed by the Italian architect, Leonardo Torriani and was built over an earlier structure in 1586. Its guns have long been silent and tt is now home to a fascinating archaeological museum.

The Charco de San Ginés is the home of the original inhabitants of the island. It is still possible to see the early homes that line the quiet waters of the lagoon, silently watching the boats dancing on the tranquil waters of the bay.

Important Dates and Fiestas

1st to the 9th of February is the Carnival of Arrecife.

25th of August sees the festival of San Ginés.
