Puerto del Rosario
At the end of the XVIII century, el Puerto del Rosario was converted into the capital city of the island of Fuerteventura. Its origins were that of a humble fishing village that was known until 1957 as Puerto de Cabras.
This is the administrative centre for the island and the buildings reflect this official status. As befits an island, dosing under a tropical sun where the temperature is nearly always that of a pleasant spring day, the pace of life is slow and relaxed. This is the ideal base for any visitor visiting the many natural parks and wonderful beaches of the island of Fuerteventura.
However, this island too has been witness to the effects of turbulent times. It was also once the home to a dissident and exiled intellectual who had been forced here during the unsettled times of the pre-civil war dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. Even though the stay of Miguel de Unamuno was brief, the hotel in which he stayed has been converted into a museum, a poignant reminder that political upheaval can affect even the most remote corners of paradise.

Place Worth Visiting
The port of the capital is the heart of the city. The influence of the sea and the inheritance of maritime tradition leak into all parts of the city and provide a rich atmosphere that is inextricably and intimately linked to the sea.
Time, however, has not stood still and the area is a harmonious collection of old and new buildings that not only reflect the tradition ways but also new beginnings.
One of the most spectacular walks of the island is that which leads through this area. The Port Walk is lined with large sculptures by a celebrated artist, Juan Bordes, an open air museum of philosophically satisfying dimensions.
