Santa Maria del Valverde is the capital city of the small island of El Hierro. This is the smallest capital city of the Canary Island chain and is located on the side of a dormant volcanic crater. It is also the most western capital city of Spain and, located at over 600 metres altitude, is the only capital city that is not located next to the coast.

The people who live here are zealous about their tranquil way of life and have resisted attempts to install traffic lights, a way in which they can still consider themselves as being more in harmony with nature that their more urbane compatriots.
