On the western coast of Menorca, the city of the same name is also known as Cuitadella and was called Iamo in roman times. During Muslim rule the city was known as Medina Miurka and finally, under the auspices of the influence from Aragón and Navarra, Cuitadella de Menorca.

The city is located on a rocky shoreline and is noted for its strong profile and outstanding evening silhouette, which is reminiscent of an Italian. This feeling is enhanced as one gets to know the streets of the city. These are narrow and retain the character imparted during medieval times. The many sumptuous palaces and unforgettable romantic corners make the city unique.

The most notable influence on the city is that imparted by the proximity to the sea and there are many restaurants and cafes that specialise in sea food, presenting another facet to the face of a city in which so many already glint in the light of an evening sun.

Routes and Places worth a Visit

Can Squella is one of the most elegant palaces of the city and is located close to the another monument of the city, the convent of Santa Clara, a building that plays a central role in the ritual festival of Saint Joan. The palace was built along classic Italian lines in the beginning of the XVIII century. Can Sqella still sports the family crest of those who first inhabited it. This is one of the best conserved palaces of the island and possesses many works of art including excellent example of Queen Anne and Chippendale furniture.

One of the most important offerings of the Menorcan tourist scenery is the dedication that local artisans place on the production of cheeses and desserts. The art has reached such a high level that each establishment just about offers its own brand. This makes it almost obligatory to taste all the varieties that lurk under the countless counters in the old town. These, along with the ‘coques de tomàtiga’, a local speciality made from local tomatoes, make a gastronomic tour one of the highlights of any stay in the city.

Important Fiestas

Ciutadella holds a procession in memorial of the re-conquest of the city. Held on or around the 17th of January, the procession is known as the ‘Processó dels Tres Tocs’. On the 23 and 24th June the town holds the notable horse trials and games. A pageantry of colour and alegría

On the 9th July is the grande fiesta of Menorca which commemorates the resistance of the city against an assault by Turkish troops in 1558.
