Palma, capital city of the Balearic Islands, occupies a sheltered, sweeping bay, which appears full to capacity with football-sized luxury yachts. The gothic towers of the Cathedral soaring above a forest of masts provides an indication, if one were needed, of how times have changed for this small island, while jagged limestone mountains of the interior, distant morning grey and pine green, girdle the city with a toothy grin.
In its interior, Mallorca comprises a web of walls that enclose fields and villages; a system that evolved based on individual smallholdings. The economy of Felanitx, a typical whitewashed village, and that of the surrounding countryside is based on pig breeding, almost a symbol of the island’s agriculture.
One of Mallorca’s most beautiful villages, Sineu, is located in the geographic centre of the island and is distinguished by its beautiful parochial church that would be considered by many to be a cathedral. Here, the visitor can taste the best fried vegetables on the island, a local speciality.
Mallorca’s history has been one of tranquillity punctuated by periods of violence. The silent stones witnessed the merciless Punic wars between Carthage and Rome, it remained silent as waves of Vandals followed by Arabic invaders swept across the island and not tears were shed when the Catalan king, Jaime I, won the island in 1229 making it, together with Rousillon and Montpellier in France, an independent kingdom. In 1349, the crown of Aragón annexed the islands and since then, its history has paralleled that of Catalonia.
