Cañaveral is located in the heart of the Sierra Morena, the last village before the Community of Extremadura.

It's location makes it an ideal for getting back to nature. Here, in the heart of the in the Sierra of Aracena and Picos de Aroche, nature abounds; birds of all varieties, deer, wild boar and a wealth of oak-dotted terrane where the famous black Iberian pig feasts on naturally grown acorns.

Cañaveral de León is a stunningly beautiful village that boasts a rare lagoon in its town centre; a unique feature, a rare commodity in the long, Andalusian summer and a focal point for the local community who use it as a swimming pool as soon as the lazy days of heat and school holidays arrive.

As an entity, the village goes back a long way. Cañaveral de León takes its name from the fact that, in the XVI century, it belonged to a group of villages that formed part of the legal Community of León. This situation changes when Felipe II, in exchange for loads of cash, proclaimed the village an administrative entity in its own right on the 30th December of 1588.

But, even though the village had its own administrative rights, it remained within the province of Badajoz, part of the Community of Extremadura, until 1833. This year saw an important reconfiguarion of the administrative boundaries of Spain and Cañaveral was located definitively in the province of Huelva in the Autonomous region of Andalusia.

Cañaveral de León's name is extracted from the two things that gave it its identity; the fact that it was originally closely linked with the Community of León and its relation with water, a place where there were cañaverales, or bullrushes, that grew abundantly hereabouts.

Today Cañaveral de León is a quiet yet very proud town whose sleepy nature belies its spirit of character and pure 'joie de vivre'. Life rotates around the countryside, agriculture and service industries and the quality of life remain second to none. And when the fiestas start in July, things really get going...
